Virallisissa tilanteissa tai oudompien henkilöiden kanssa käytettävä kieli poikkeaa kaverin kanssa juttelusta. Nuori henkilö ei voi vielä nykyisinkään englantia puhuvissa maissa puhutella vanhempaa henkilöä etunimeltä, ellei hän saa siihen tämän lupaa.
